
Tokyo-based dev ARIKA was founded by Capcom legend Akira Nishitani, who worked on iconic 90s arcade titles like Final Fight and Street Fighter 2.
In his new company, he created the Street Fighter EX trilogy, a largely underappreciated twist on Capcom’s fighter franchise, which repurposed the franchise’s 2D action in 3D.
These titles are often overlooked by modern fighting game fans, but while not flawless, we’ve always enjoyed the way they feel. We have particularly strong memories of Street Fighter EX3 on the PS2, a launch title at the time.

Fighting EX Layer, released on the PS4 in 2018, was created as a spiritual successor to both 1998’s original Fighting Layer and the Street Fighter EX series, featuring some overlapping original characters.
And it’s currently $0.99/£0.79 on the PS Store, an all-time low promotional price, as ARIKA celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Here’s what the dev wrote on social media:
“Since our founding in 1995, we have pursued the essence of 'play', bringing many titles into the world over the years. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the players who have supported us, the development staff who have walked alongside us, our publishers and partner companies, and the game fans who have warmly cheered us on.”
While there are a lot of technical gameplay mechanics to wrap your head around here, it’s also probably the most accessible fighter ARIKA’s ever made, with auto-combos and a simplified command system.
Honestly, even though we never got around to reviewing this game when it launched, we’ve been playing it on and off for several years now. And thus we highly recommend you give it a try for its new bargain bin price point.

Sadly this game is a ghost town for years.
I bought it from PS store sale back in 2020 after Arika patched the game with rollback netcode.
The netcode itself was pretty solid although no crossplay and gameplay was quite fun. But holy smeagol the game was barebone as F*!
I can't believe the arcade mode ending only showed a short paragraph of monologue with the character portrait 🤣

Adored EX plus Alpha on the PS1, had a very different rhythm to it than all the other fighters of the time.

You can't really go wrong at that price can you. That's less than half the cost of a sandwich at Aldi.
$1 is super tempting, but I almost never play the fighters I already own.

@RiotShieldsHurt If budget is the excuse then that's not a good excuse. An indie fighting game like Skullgirls not just has Arcade mode but it also has a dedicated Story mode that showed plenty of artworks & dialogues.
Not to mention Skullgirls also has a very robust Tutorial & Training mode which Fighting EX Layer lacks.
Beside, Arika can used crowdfunding / kickstarter if they don't have enough budget which sadly they didn't used it for whatever reason.
More publishers should consider doing sales like this for games that are underappreciated. I would never have bought this game at full or even half the price, but now I did. And they got a little bit of money.
@PuppetMaster just because one company was able to, doesn't mean another was - I won't speculate on why something did or did not occur, I can only get the final result. Believe me, I would've loved to have seen a more fleshed-out & completed final version of Fighting EX Layer, but since it didn't I will enjoy it for what it is, even though it's lacking some features.

But if you don't want to speculate about what happened then you shouldn't replied to me and made excuses for Arika as if they're too poor to make better characters ending in arcade mode.
Again. If a studio like Lab Zero who's smaller and has less budget than Arika can developed a fighting game with good story mode and even a robust training & tutorial mode then there's no excuses for Arika. Period.

Skullgirls was far from a great game, it was playable at best. No great story mode, buggy, and characters were silly and pointless.
You needn't mention Lab Zero any more - I got your point about the product they released the first time you said it.
I don't speculate about anything a studio did, because it's speculation - something you're adept at, but is inherently wrong to begin with.
What I do, instead, is enjoy the final result of a studio's work, whether perfect or not, instead of shi**ing all over it and comparing it to a different game.
I get it - you prefer Skullgirls.

FYI. FEXL was launched full price at $60 and the less contents edition at $40. But it was more barebone than SF V at launch. Since then, Arika didn't do much to add more contents for the game. Eiher you like it or not, they deserves all the critics.

Did i say you can't enjoy the game? No.
But i'm NOT you. I have my own standard as well every right to praise or sh*tting on games that i've bought.
I didn't even "sh*tting all over" the game. I said FEXL gameplay was fun and the netcode is solid. But unfortunate the game is barebone AF which is the truth.
Both Skullgirls and FEXL are fighting games with the same situation: small budget and developed by small devs. But one has more effort while the other didn't. It's a fair comparison.
If i compare FEXL with SF 6, that would be unfair because SF 6 makes FEXL looks like a elementary school project lol.

I love fighting games and i want devs to offer a good amount of contents as well solid basic features that can attract more people to play fighting games. It's that simple.
Skullgirls was one of good example. If Skullgirls as barebone as FEXL then i will say what i said about FEXL. The same can be say if FEXL has the same as contents as Skullgirls.
